How to Find the Right Tyre for Your Needs.

When the time comes to replace the OE tyres on your vehicle, do you buy the same as the OE tyres, or do you choose a different tyre? OE tyres are the Original Equipment tyres that were developed specifically for your make and model as specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

If you choose to stay with the OE tyres, when buying new tyres, it means that the following factors remain the same as those of your current tyres:

  • Physical dimensions
  • Internal construction
  • Tread design
  • Key performance attributes

However, in some instances, OE tyres may not be the best suited to you, depending on where and how you drive your vehicle. Taking some time to consider the following factors can greatly assist you when it comes to buying your next set of tyres, even if you aren’t considering the choice between OE or other tyres.

Know What Size Tyres You Need.

Knowing the size of your current tyres ensures that when it comes to looking at new tyres, you will be looking at the right size for your vehicle. Tyre sizes are standardised globally, to find out what size your tyres are, simply take a look at the sidewall of the tyre.

The tyre size is moulded into the tyre sidewall, represented as a series of numbers, which are separated by slashes or letters. For example: 285/75 R16. You can also find information regarding the recommended tyre size for your car in the owner’s manual. It’s important to be aware that in this instance, the tyre size is based on a vehicle that is using the factory recommended tyre and that the vehicle is completely standard.

Consider How You Use Your Vehicle.

There are different tyre tread patterns available, intended for different driving purposes, ride qualities and capabilities. Taking the time to consider how you use your vehicle will help to narrow down what type of tyre you should be looking at that will best complement your use.

  • On-Road Performance:

If you use your vehicle entirely on-road then a set of HT (Highway Terrain) or Touring Tyres may be a good option for you. These tyres are intended for around 90% on-road use and typically offer a smooth, quiet and comfortable ride.

  • On and Off-Road Performance:

If you typically use your vehicle on sealed roads, but like having the capability to go off-road then a set of AT (All Terrain) tyres may be the choice for you. AT tyres are intended for around 60% on-road use with additional grip for off-road driving.

  • Off-Road Performance:

If you find yourself frequently off-road, driving across rough and rugged terrain then you will want to consider a set of MT (Mud Terrain) tyres. These are intended for around 85% off-road use but on-road you are likely to experience increased road noise.

What is Your Budget?

The need for new tyres can sometimes take us by surprise and it can be tempting to simply buy a cheap set of tyres to get you back on the road with minimal fuss or expense. However, buying quality tyres may well save you money in the long run.

Premium, quality tyres are typically known to offer enhanced longevity, safety and performance features, including improved handling capabilities and reduced braking distances. In other words, you tend to get what you pay for.

Certainly, this isn’t to say that budget tyres are bad. All tyres sold within Australia are required to meet the standards specified in the Australian Design Rules (ADR). This means that when you buy new tyres from a reputable dealer, whether you buy budget or premium tyres, they are all required to meet certain safety and performance standards.
